Orrcon Steel has helped create some of Australia’s most iconic infrastructure and unique steel projects.
See below some examples of our work…
Orrcon Steel has recently been involved with two residential construction projects on Fraser Island. One with GMI Homes and the other with B & B Building Supplies.
Fraser Island has a subtropical climate with high levels of salt air due to its proximity to the sea. As such, these projects required materials that can withstand a harsh marine environment.
MAXI-TUBE® was the ideal product solution for these projects due to its anti corrosive zinc-alloy coating, which provides maximum durability, efficiency and versatility in many aggressive environments. Orrcon Steel’s MAXI-TUBE® was specifically used for the following projects.
MAXI-TUBE® was a key component in GMI Homes non-welded platform floor system. The house project was in close proximity to the beach front of Fraser Island.
MAXI-TUBE® was chosen for the floor system due to its durability in a salt laden environment, which makes it ideal for an enclosed, unwashed floor structure.
The MAXI-TUBE® product was not only ideal for providing a solution in the coastal tropical environment, but it was also a key element in providing construction efficiency.
“GMI homes have demonstrated with homes completed that they can build homes and townhouses in approximately 40% of traditional build time, together with utilising Orrcon Steel’s durable MAXI-TUBE®"
John Hammond – GMI Homes.
The floor area of the house under construction at Fraser Island was just under 400 square metres. Two men completed the whole installation (including the decking) in 4 days. The MAXI-TUBE® sections used were 75 sq x 4 columns, 150 x 50 x 2 floor bearers & joists, plus 150 x 50 x 3 bearers.

Orrcon Steel has been working closely with long standing customer B & B Building Supplies for a residential project that began in August 2016. Our MAXI-TUBE® product was used as house posts and bearers to create subfloor framing for a house located close to the beach at Kingfisher Bay.
B & B Building Supplies fabricated the house posts from Orrcon Steel’s MAXI-TUBE® and supplied them to the builder for installation. The 89 sq x 2 MAXI-TUBE® sections were used for the house and deck posts and 125 x 75 x 3 MAXI-TUBE® for floor bearers. Hot dip galvanised base plates were screwed on and top plates were used for the house posts. The custom made top plates for the deck posts were welded on, and then hot metal sprayed to provide a coating that has the same durability as the MAXI-TUBE®coating.
“The main benefit of using MAXI-TUBE® for this project was that it is ideal for the marine environment due to it’s anti corrosion properties. In addition, choosing MAXI-TUBE®from Orrcon Steel also reduces lead times and construction costs”
Brett Bogaart – B & B Building Supplies.

The above corrosive environment project examples demonstrate the benefits of
MAXI-TUBE® in coastal environments. With good galvanic protection, it is also ideal for industrial applications, transport projects, intensive farming, plus food & beverage processing industries.

From the magnificent King Kong in the hit stage musical, to the creatures that stunned audiences in Walking With Dinosaurs, to the three beloved mascots of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, the Creature Technology Company has built them all.
Orrcon Steel's MAXI-TUBE® continues to go from strength to strength.
We recently worked with KWIKSURE Building Systems to offer a revolutionary non-welded construction system that integrates MAXI-TUBE® into steel framing. This new system enables significant material and labour cost savings on building projects.
The innovative zinc alloy coated steel section MAXI-TUBE® is also making a splash on the highly corrosive Surfers Paradise high-rise precinct. The Aquarius Building Sun Roof Frame was specified as fully welded MAXI-TUBE® with a marine grade paint specification.
Since it was launched in 2014, an increasing number of projects in aggressive environments have seen the benefits of using MAXI-TUBE® with it's ZM 275 coating.
For further information on why this innovative product was used on these projects, refer below:
NON-WELDED KWIKSURE PORTAL FRAME – GLADSTONE SWIMMING CENTRE, QLD
The Little Snappers Swimming School at the Gladstone Swimming Centre required a durable coated steel product that reduced lead times, construction times, and costs by using a non-welded pre-coated finished product.
Orrcon Steel supplied 150 x 100 x 6, 100sq x 6, 100sq x 4, and 100 x 50 x 3 MAXI-TUBE®.
The KWIKSURE system was specified by Gladstone Drafting due to it’s efficiencies and pre-coated MAXI-TUBE® was specified as it provides the durable and cost effective solution required for the harsh swimming centre environment. The other advantage was the use of mill finish tubular sections and sandwich panels that provide an aesthetically pleasing finish.
The non-welded laser cut KWIKSURE system provided a structural solution in the cyclonic zone of Gladstone. The erection of the frame was completed in just two days.

MARINE GRADE PAINT SPECIFICATION – SURFERS PARADISE SUN ROOF FRAME, QLD
The Aquarius Building Penthouse Sun Roof Frame required a durable coated steel product that could facilitate the application of a marine grade paint specification. MAXI-TUBE® was the preferred system as it is durable, reduces lead times and costs, and has a consistent zinc alloy finish.
Orrcon Steel supplied 150 x 100 x 6, 100sq x 6, 75sq x 3 MAXI-TUBE®. The Paint Specification was a zinc epoxy at weld zones plus a 2 coat marine grade epoxy system.
The structure had to be fabricated on site due to access and lifting limitations, so a durable pre-coated steel tube section was essential for success. The pre-coated MAXI-TUBE® was specified by Reinmac Engineers as it provided all the solutions for the design and the corrosive coastal environment of Surfers Paradise.
The pre-coated MAXI-TUBE® has an engineered defect free surface that ensures high quality adhesion of paint. This is a major advantage in harsh coastal environments that require a marine grade specification. The MAXI-TUBE® weld zones were surface prepared with a Bristle Blaster power tool and coated with zinc rich epoxy prior to the intermediate and finish coats.
The corrosive environment required Stainless Steel to be used as cleats and base plates which provided a high quality outcome for fabricated MAXI-TUBE®.
