MFE CHINCHILLA : ONE MODEL DOESN’T SUIT EVERYONE, BUT A LOCAL FOCUS IS SHINING THROUGH.

As a loyal customer of Orrcon Steel / Metalcorp Toowoomba, MFE is focused on utilising local product and support services wherever they can.

“We only exist in Chinchilla thanks to the community. We have to do our part to make sure the town remains viable. If we don’t support it, it’ll die out and our business won’t exist” said Louise McMahon, Business Services Manager MFE.

MFE started out in 2011 as a husband and wife venture, when Louise and Greg moved to Chinchilla which is 150 kilometres north west of Toowoomba in Queensland. They saw an opportunity to create a local business to service the growing gas industry, along with opportunities in the mining and agricultural sectors. Drawing upon their history in the mining industry and with a clear vision to become a customer centric service provider, they built a company that could provide industrial and large subcontractor support to the region.

As they’ve diversified and grown their business in a competitive manufacturing space that was dominated by large corporations, many with foreign ownership, they chose to partner with Orrcon Steel for their steel supply.

“Orrcon Steel won us over with their commitment to the relationship, they’re always willing to sit down around the table and discuss options for us. The Orrcon people made a great first impression on us. We were able to talk through finding an edge in the manufacturing space. They made us feel important regardless of the size of our business. Our principles were well aligned” said Louise.

Orrcon Steel National Sales and Marketing Manager Lester Kirkwood said “ What MFE has achieved is simply an outstanding example of local business success that is focused, with skills to implement a successful local business model. Investing money in local communities means support for local businesses which ultimately safeguards our children's future by ensuring we have a local manufacturing and supply channel in Australia ”.

At the core of MFE’s business strategy is a policy they adopted early on - that permanent jobs would be filled by locals. Now with 31 40 employees from Chinchilla and surrounding western downs, they have shown that strategy is now fulfilled.  “Every dollar we spend on supply or wages is a dollar invested back into our local communities to support local families and businesses'' said Louise.

As the Winner of the QLD Training Awards ‘Medium Employer of the Year’ 2016, they were recognised for their commitment to career development and individualised training.

“As we continue to grow we are faced with the challenge of how to attract and retain local talent.

One of our messages to the teams in our business and to potential employees, is we understand there are different family pressures and lifestyle choices and that we’re committed to them in their job and their family. We don’t do a ‘one model fits everybody’” Louise stated. Whether this be through flexibility with staff rosters, sharing out of hours call-ins or their investment in apprenticeships, MFE’s open communication with and commitment to their people has been a driving factor for their growth.

"Our success to date has been very much about the people. They are the foundation of the culture, of the community and the ones who deliver our promises to our customers" said Greg McMahon, Managing Director of MFE.

MFE purchase Australian made steel from Orrcon Steel which is produced at the Salisbury Mill in Brisbane. With internationally accredited NATA testing laboratory utilised in house and coil sourced through BlueScope, Louise is confident there is traceability for all the products they purchase.

“Quality is paramount for supplying the gas and energy projects, which is why Orrcon Steel is trusted with supplying steel for our business. We have the confidence to communicate with our clients that we supply certified goods that are top quality with full traceability should that be needed. In the gas and energy sector that is critical considering where the end product is used” said Louise.

Metalcorp Toowoomba provides square Hollow Section products from the Salisbury tube mill. With prompt deliveries of product as needed, it reduces the need for large storage space and inventory holding costs that are associated with importing products. This enables cash to be focused on growing the business in key areas and lowering business risk.

“Surely, part of our responsibility (as a business) is to support Australia and Australian made” Louise stated.

“It's about having the right balance and making sure we educate our end consumer on the importance of local supply and relevance of additional services. Support for our country will come from supporting Australian made products. It's about how the product started in manufacture using local materials, not just getting it on their doorstep, but explaining about all those extra value add components.”

With the renewable market expected to grow in Chinchilla and the western downs area, Orrcon Steel and Metalcorp look forward to seeing it through with MFE and supporting them on the path ahead.

Fit for purpose solution for the right environment. Choose Orrcon Steel’s ALLGAL® and ULTRA-SPEC GAL®

Electrogalvanized

Australian Steel suitable for Australia’s unique environment

The harsh Australian environment wreaks havoc on the construction industry with an estimated $75 billion in damage each year due to corrosion*. A significant portion of this is preventable. Corrosion is a natural process and understanding the factors that cause corrosion allows a fit for purpose approach to design and material selection. Corrosion can compromise the aesthetics and integrity of a structure. If left unchecked corrosion may consume large areas resulting in pitting, scale and loss of wall thickness. Corrosion can be cost effectively addressed; in a similar way to issues that can occur in other materials such as timber or concrete. For example, durability can be enhanced by applying appropriate barrier protection coatings and/or using sacrificial coatings. Metallic zinc coatings on steel has been used for over a century to provide long-term, durable and cost-effective protection of steel structures. Zinc provides that protection by sacrificing itself in corrosive environments instead of the steel, as it is the more ‘active’ metal.

The durability that can be achieved for a specific structure is an outcome of the coating system selected and the design process based on the consideration of:

  • The function and estimated life of the structure
  • The environment, contaminants and microclimatic factors

Other factors such as materials, aesthetics and owner’s requirements for each part of the structure need to be taken into account. The corrosion rate of steel and/or zinc coatings has been determined over many years by industry experts at multiple exposure sites in state and territories around the country. The exterior environment is monitored and described in terms of the geography and its proximity to airborne contaminants; such as chemical pollution or salt-spray from the bay, coast or ocean. The corrosivity of Australian environments for steel exposed to the atmosphere has been categorised on a 6-level scale, subject to the rate of material loss in microns (μm). The table below is described in AS 4312 and can be used as a starting point to estimate the durability of exposed structures and the subsequent time to first maintenance.

Corrosivity in Australia described in AS 4312.

Corrosivity Category Corrosion Rate Steel μm / year Corrosion Rate Zinc μm / year Typical Exterior Environment
C1: Very low <1.3 <0.1 Few alpine areas
C2: Low 1.3 to 25 0.1 to 0.7 Arid / rural / urban
C3: Medium 25 to 50 0.7 to 2.1 Coastal
C4: High 50 to 80 2.1 to 4.2 Sea-shore (calm)
C5: Very high 80 to 200 4.2 to 8.4 Sea-shore (surf) /offshore within chemical plants

Zinc Coatings - Electrogalvanized ALLGAL®

fit newsThe Orrcon Steel electrogalvanizing process applies a uniform zinc coating to steel coil in size range from 1.6mm up to 6mm. This technology is unique to Orrcon Steel and Orrcon is the only Australian pipe and tube manufacturer that has the capability to wholly manufacture galvanized pipe and tube products that are greater than 3mm. Australian-made BlueScope steel coil is the raw material used for ALLGAL®, where the raw steel coils are acid-pickled to a white metal finish and then rinsed clean, before passing through the galvanizing line where a fine, smooth even layer of zinc is electrically applied to the surface. Orrcon’s ALLGAL® Z100 has a standard coating (AS 4750 ZE50/50) with a minimum 7 microns per side, which equates to 50 grams per square meter, per side. A clear coat paint is then applied to finished tube to provide short-term protection during storage and transit. ALLGAL® is best suited for use in low to mildly corrosive environments C1 to C2.
“At Panelfab we use the ALLGAL® product on all of our buildings base frames because not only is it an Australian made product but it’s coating produces less welding splatter which means less cleaning on the weld area as well and the welding gun, overall meaning faster production time. We have used ALLGAL® for a long time and will continue to use it in the future”. - Ashish Bhagat - Production Manager, Panelfab.

ALLGAL® is preferred by many fabricators who find it easy to weld, with minimal weld fume and a spangle -free appearance, whilst powdercoaters say they like the smooth finish. For a cost-effective and easy product to work with - ALLGAL® coated pipe and tube is your fit for purpose solution.

Australian Made Steel - Now more than ever

Support Our Steel Industry

Steel is the backbone of Australia’s construction, infrastructure and manufacturing sectors. It’s shaped the image of this great nation in the form of bridges, motorways and stadiums - where we play, where we work and where we live.

It’s helped our economy when times have been tough by creating jobs and according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, employs 110,000 Australians1. With the current economic climate, now more than ever, it is important to support local business by purchasing Australian made steel.

Buying Australian made steel means that at every point of production, your product benefits Australia. Every dollar you spend is a dollar that’s invested back into our communities to support local families and businesses. Investing money in these communities means we can safeguard the future for our children by continuing to create and manufacture products within Australia.

When you buy Australian steel, you know where your product comes from, and you know local resources are used in its production. With two steel producers, and over 300 steel distribution outlets throughout the country and numerous fabrication, manufacturing and engineering companies, the Australian steel industry generates $29 billion in annual revenue and is an essential part of the Australian economy

Using Australian made steel doesn’t just create jobs and boost the local economy, it simply makes good sense. Buying Australian products gives you confidence around the product as Australia has high manufacturing standards.

Local producers adhere to government guidelines in relation to occupational health and safety, ensuring safe working conditions. Ensuring workers receive a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work, in a safe, secure, and sustainable environment.

Imports are growing every year, with China producing more than half of the world’s steel. This has led to a glut of steel landing at prices that make it hard for local steel production to compete.

Questions remain around overseas steel producers abiding by Australian Standards. Concerns continue over non-compliant imported steel products with defects in substandard welding and corrosion protection – underlining why it makes sense to have a trusted supplier of Australian made steel.

By meeting Australian Standards, you can be sure that the products are manufactured with Australian conditions in mind. With an environment as harsh as Australia’s, you can trust Australian made steel to have the hardiness to go the distance.

It is now more important than ever to stand behind Australian industries. Across the private and public sector, cities and regional communities, we ask you to continue to support Australian steel. In doing so, you are supporting Australian jobs, communities and safeguarding our future. We are a resilient country and united, we will get through these challenging times.

COVID-19 : Business Update 23 March 2020

Covid-19 Update

We continue to see the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus and impact this pandemic is having on our way of life and the health and well-being of people in our communities and workplaces. These are extraordinary times and I would like to update you on the steps our business has taken to be proactive in trying to limit the further spread of this virus and how we seek to interact with our customers.

We have instituted relevant government guidelines relating to effective hygiene across our distribution business and our manufacturing plants. We have instituted social distancing and ceased large group gatherings and face-to-face meetings on site as well as limiting supplier interactions.

In relation to customer visits, we are minimizing face-to-face meetings. We have asked our sales teams to reconsider all visit schedules such that only essential visits occur.

We are suspending all external customer entertainment, customer visits to our manufacturing plants and we are discouraging visits to our distribution centres.

We are continuing to contact customers by phone and email and welcome similar forms of communication from our customers to our sales teams and National Customer Service Centre.

As an Australian pipe and tube manufacturer, our feed materials are sourced from BlueScope and our supply chain is operating as normal.  We will provide timely updates if we foresee any disturbance to our operations.

We understand that trading conditions are likely to become more challenging over the coming weeks and months in all areas of the economy.  This will need all of us to be working together and supporting one another the best we can.

This is a unique situation and one that is changing rapidly.  Let’s stay in touch so we can navigate through this very difficult period together.

COVID-19 Coronavirus update for our customers

Covid-19 Update

The Coronavirus outbreak is a great concern for communities throughout the world. Whilst health authorities and all forms of Government are working to care for those affected and to prevent further spread of the virus, there are also commercial concerns being expressed with regards to the security of local and international supply chains.

We, at Orrcon Steel and Metalcorp Distribution, are following all publicly advised health, safety and wellbeing procedures to minimize risk to our employees, contractors, service providers, suppliers and customers.

From a supply chain security perspective, we have worked with all our Australian suppliers and can confirm that we do not anticipate any disruption to locally manufactured products such as pipe and tube. Our inbound and outbound freight arrangements are operating as normal and we do not foresee any issues in this regard.

With respect to the small proportion of products that we procure from overseas, we are in constant contact with our suppliers and believe that the inventory levels we have on hand, coupled with the supply arrangements we have in place, position us well to serve our customers normally over the next 2-3 months.

Over coming weeks and months, we will understand more about any future impact on global supply chains and we will update our customers accordingly. In the meantime, please contact your local representative to seek specific guidance on any matter and be assured that all at Orrcon Steel and Metalcorp Distribution are committed to working in partnership with each customer based on your own unique needs.

Bushfire Appeal

Bushfire Appeal

Let’s help people get back on their feet

Our communities are our homes. We have been shocked and saddened by the devastation and loss of life caused by the horrendous bushfires which continue to threaten many regions and communities across Australia.

In the first instance, our parent company BlueScope has donated $1 million to the Red Cross bushfire relief appeal. Through the Red Cross we will also offer all employees the opportunity to make a donation to this fund. In addition, as the nation recovers we plan to work with aid agencies and other relevant authorities to see how our Australian businesses can best help rebuild communities as they recover from this disaster. In some cases, it may be many months before communities are ready for this support.

You can help too by donating to the Red Cross via our link to the Red Cross fundraising page. All money raised goes straight to Red Cross to help affected communities with disaster relief.

Dealing with an emergency can be stressful and exhausting and recovering from a disaster is a complex process that may take months, even years to overcome. Red Cross supports people through their recovery by being there to provide practical and emotional support and information.

Our business is also a supporter of the National Centre for Farmer Health and we continue to provide funds for this organisation to enable them to reach out to affected farming communities.

As a responsible Australian business, helping people who have been affected by disasters is really important to us and we seek your support. Please help by donating via our fundraising page. All donations above $2 are tax deductible.

BlueScope also hold independent third-party accreditation to ISO14001 Environmental Management System certificate, which ensures it can deliver on its commitment to continuously improve its environmental performance.

BlueScope’s fully integrated steelmaking method enables a high overall recycling rate.

Due to the metallurgical properties of BlueScope’s steel it can be recycled continually with no degradation in performance.

According to a report by Blue Environment, Australian steel scrap is in high demand due to its quality and cleanliness and as such can be traded globally as a commodity.

This is demonstrated by an Australian recycling rate of 89% for steel products that are at the end of their life.

It’s also reported that on average, up to 25% of BlueScope’s steel is manufactured from recovered steel content; which includes 8.5% that is post-consumer recycled and 6.5% that is pre-consumer recycled.

“We pride ourselves on our role as a good corporate citizen. We recognise our social responsibilities and strive to continuously improve our performance in the areas of health, safety, environment and community,” Mr Vassella said.

With steel being the most recycled material in the world, Orrcon Steel as part of the BlueScope group will continue to adhere to their principles of quality, innovation, flexibility and dedication.
